Never noticed seed on the variegated Foxy located in another part of the collection. The one I’m growing in Leucadia is from the same source and purchased about the same time, as this and another « Foxy Lady » I have. @96720 Taking a look at your foxy lady in the pic.
The collection has a few standard green Foxies, and a Variegated specimen whose crown receives full sun. FULL DISCLOSURE…these are not photos of my palms, nor did I take these photos. What’s the difference between the variegated and the green ? There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation. Did not notice the variegation earlier but as Jim pointed out, on the lower leaf there it is. Yeah I could tell it is 100% green as well. If anyone can find a pic of a small full green please post to show the difference thank you Few variegated fronds …..
- Number 1 on my personal list of favorite feather-leaved / crown shafted palms so i completely understand the allure / desire to grow one ( …or a few, lol )..
- I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded.
- F2 would be a foxy lady x foxy lady (Exc)x(WxV) rather than back crossed with either parent.
- I had about 7 seeds so I just planted them all, one popped.
- From what I understand, this tree has been in the pot all along and was not recently potted from a field grown specimen.
- This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse.
- Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang?

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a small foxy lady or gear me in the right deduction thank you Myolensis triple and the (now infamous) foxy lady… Last year I added three Beccariophoenix alfredii, which I’m really liking so far due to their hardiness, and some Areca palms. I caught the « Palm tree bug » a few years ago when my wife and I wanted to add some planters to our yard, and I’ve been turned into a palm-tree nerd, as i call myself, ever since. So today is my 24 hour soak, I added some super thrive to the water at 1 tsp per gallon and am hoping that my plant drinks it up!
Are Foxy Lady palms sterile?
I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do. I have some flowering/fruiting foxtails near an adonidia doing the same. I have a couple of completely green ones in my yard and there isn’t a bit of variegation
If you meant the spear has not moved at all, then your palm was in trouble from day one. You said, « I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth. » Repeat the kelp extract/ water mix in 2 weeks. I was advised by the seller to apply a kelp extract/ water mix, then heavy water every other day, with superthrive/ water every five days. I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn’t be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped) Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles.

- I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!!
Time will tell with my original plant… I’m encouraged to see some growth of the spear, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear.
Sometime even though they are hard, they float. They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today.
Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger » seeder » at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded.

Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature. Here are a few slightly variegated ones. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies.
Foxy Lady in Trouble!
I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.
I think it’s better classifies as mostly green or mostly variegated that’s my conclusion There are no light colored green leaves and zero variegation. That palm is 100% solid dark healthy green. David the light must be playing tricks in the photo, this palm has zero variegation. Full greens do not have any variegation.

That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. This is a holy foxy gold grail palm for many of us PTers. Going to a spot in the Los Angeles area If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come.
The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. It PROVES that it is a true foxy lady,as foxtails are almost never variegated. I’ve got several foxtails (probably too many, but it was the first « exotic » tree that I really liked), some common King palms, and some Kentias. Foxy Lady palms are incredibly fast growing palms and I think yours has a fighting chance if you get it in the ground ASAP and keep it’s rootball watered. It never ceases to amaze me how little water rootbound palms in pots get, even if you soak them everyday.
If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm – Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed. Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree? Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.
